Message from 10th november 2016 After my initial mails about the newly discovered walls and foundations of the old synagogue of Freiburg im Breisgau which should be preserved and displayed in a visible manner, many of you have signed and contributed to signing the petition "to retain the newly discovered walls and foundations of the old Synagogue of Freiburg im Breisgau in a visible manner where they stand", I would like to inform you about the tragic last events : :
- So far, more than 720 persons have signed the petition, but this might not have been enough to change the destruction mind of the Lordmayor who has instructed to start on November 2. 2016 the demolition of the upper walls and foundations . It was terminated on November 4.
- Jewish communities of Freiburg have unanimously expressed their decisions to preserve in a visible manner the walls and foundations recently discovered.
- Although 3 layers of stones have been well numbered to build a separate memorial, many other stones have been destroyed without any precaution of any kind (see the attached video). Any further rebuilding will be extremely difficult.
- the Chairwomen of the local jewish community, Mrs Irina Katz, present on site to préserve it, has been threatened with the police by Mr Haag - the City Council representative in charge of the demolition.
- The construction of the initial water basin will cover for ever all other remaining walls and foundations with a permanent and definitive concrete screed.
- These walls and foundations were the only and unique evidence and tangible proof of the existence of the jewish community in Freiburg before 1940.
In other words, the scandalous behavior of the Lord Mayor, who does not respect the memory and souvenir of the old jewish community and its members who were forced to flee from Freiburg until 1940 or who perished in Auschwitz, should be highlighted internationally.
All this happened only one week before the remembrance eve of the "Night of broken glass" (where 250 synagogues were destroyed in Germany on November 10.1938) which will take place in Freiburg on November 9. 2016.
What the National Socialism had not terminated, the Lord Mayor Dr Dieter Salomon and Mr Haag have finished the work, without waiting the approval or disapproval of the City Council on Monday 7.November, while several minority political groups have already opposed to the destruction.
The Lord Mayor has brought the shame on the city of Freiburg.
All associations which support the memory and remembrance of the jewish communities destroyed in 1940 in Baden-Württemberg are desparate.
The scandal and the hypocrisy of the Lord Mayor Dr Dieter Salomon, and subsequently of the City Council, should lead to your immediate reaction.
Could you please write a few freely expressed sentences to all City Council members about what you feel and suffer regarding what has happened and about the behaviour of Mr Dieter Salomon and Haag ?
Please circulate this mail to all your friends, friends of your friends, acquaintances, and press relations, so that they do the same or write an article.
For doing so, as quickly-quickly and as many as possible, in English, in French or in German:
- just copy all email adresses here under (copy and paste),
- and write with your own free words what you feel about this scandalous destruction and the hypocrisy of the behaviour of Mr Dieter Salomon and Haag, in opposition with the memory and remembrance of the former jewish community and their members who perished in the holocaust.

Mrs Irina Katz, Chairwoman of the Jewish Community of Freiburg iBreisgau, has warned us on Sunday October 16. about an event which moves our memory.
- Since 2013, in collaboration with the Jewish Community of Freiburg, a project has been discussed at the level of the city council, in order to build a fountain and small canals on the site of the old Synagogue and the old Jewish Community House (located in the city center between the current university and the theater), which had been destroyed in 1939 by the nazis; This fountain and these canals have been thought to be a memorial location.
- Works have started this year. But in September and October, until last week, foundations walls of the old Synagogue and the old Community House (inaugurated in 1870) have been discovered, although the preparation studies with radars had not identified anything, as well as elements of the old wall of the city which originates in about the years 1100. The Board of the Jewish Community of Freiburg has been aware of the situation by jewish students who have taken pictures.
- Some elements of these foundations have already been destroyed in order to pursue the planned works, but specialists of the historical building office are now at work and have stopped the construction.
Naturellement, en notre qualité de descendants d'anciennes familles de Freiburg iBreisgau et du Land de Baden-Würtemberg, cette situation totalement nouvelle ne peut nous laisser indifférents.
Une réunion doit avoir lieu ce mercredi 19 octobre à la Mairie de Freiburg entre Madame Irina Katz et le Conseil Municipal de Freiburg, où la suite à donner sera discuté.
Mrs Irina Katz needs our written support towards Mr Dieter Salomon, Oberbürgermeister of the city of Freiburg, in order to be able to stand firm so that the current project is modified in order to :
- pursue the archeological excavations as the recent findings prove there are certainly many other constructions in the earth,
- keep intact all discovered materials,
- make visible from the outside all what has been brought to light,
- propose very quickly a new authentic memory project on the Old Synagogue square with what will have been discovered.
